The Palma International Boat Show recognises the work of the Fishermen’s Guild of Sant Pere with the Marcial Sánchez-Barcáiztegui Award

  • The regional secretary for Democratic Memory and Productive Sectors, Jesús Jurado, presented the award to the fishermen at the boat show.

The Palma Fishermen’s Guild has been awarded the Marcial Sánchez-Barcáiztegui prize, which is presented each year at the Palma International Boat Show. The regional secretary for Productive Sectors and Democratic Memory, Jesús Jurado, presented the award to the president of the Guild, Domingo Bonnín, this morning at the Moll Vell fairgrounds. The award ceremony was also attended by the managing director of the Institute for Business Innovation of the Balearic Islands (IDI), Mariona Luis; the director general of Fisheries and Marine Environment of the Government of the Balearic Islands, Juan Mercant Terrasa; the director of the Boat Show, Chema Sans, and former skippers of the Fishermen’s Guild of Sant Pere.

The organisers wanted to recognise the work of the Sant Pere Fishermen’s Guild after more than 30 years of collaboration with the boat show, as year after year the Guild works to relocate the fishing sector so that the Palma International Boat Show can be held over these four days.

The regional secretary for Productive Sectors and Democratic Memory, Jesús Jurado, recalled “the role of the Award which, since 2013, recognises people and institutions that contribute to the promotion of the Balearic nautical sector”, and thanked the work of the Cofradía both for the fair and for artisanal fishing.

While the president of the Brotherhood, Domingo Bonnín, stressed that “this award is a recognition of the work and collaboration carried out over 34 years, since the fair and fishermen have always been linked”.

Previous winners of the Marcial Sánchez-Barcáiztegui Award have been the Balearic Naval Regatta Commission (2013); the SAR Princesa Sofía Trophy (2014); the Escola de Mestres d’Aixa del Consell de Mallorca (2015); Margarita Dahlberg (2016); Diego Colón de Carvajal (2017); Miguel Suñer (2018), Isabel Subirats (2019) and the Red Cross of the Sea (2021).

Presentation of the “Rei en Jaume” High Seas Regatta

After the presentation of the Marcial Sánchez-Barcáiztegui award, the presentation of the XXXVI Regata de Altura Rei en Jaume took place at the Palma International Boat Show.

The race, which recreates the 110 nautical mile route covered in 1229 by the Conqueror Jaume I to disembark in Mallorca, will be held between the 8th and 10th of September, organised by the Santa Ponça and Salou yacht clubs.

The presentation was attended by the Deputy Mayor and Sports Councillor of the Calvià Town Hall, Eva Serra; the director of the Rei en Jaume Regatta, Manuel Nadal de Uhler; the manager of the Santa Ponça Yacht Club,, Javier Arrizabalaga; Nani Mas Nani Mas as representative of Port Adriano, and the director of the Boat Show, Chema Sans.
